Choosing an under sink water filter
An under sink water filter treats the water you drink and cook with at one tap, tucked away in the cupboard below. The right system depends on your water source, how you want filtered water delivered and how much space you have.
Start with your water supply
For mains (town) water, the main goals are usually reducing chlorine taste and odour and sediment. Puretec's PureMix Z6 is designed for low-sediment mains water and filters down to 0.1 micron (nominal), including Giardia and Cryptosporidium cysts. For rainwater, rural or harsher supplies, the PureMix Z7 is a 1 micron (nominal) filter designed for mains, rain, harsh and rural water, with anti-scaling protection. On tank water and concerned about bacteria? The Puretec Hybrid M1 combines dual-stage filtration with Radfire UV technology that Puretec says kills up to 99.9% of bacteria.
Choose how filtered water reaches you
Inline filters such as the PureMix Z6, Z7 and Oliveri Inline connect to the cold line of your existing mixer, so there's no extra tap hole. Filter-and-tap kits such as the Puretec Z18, TW1 and X4 add a dedicated filtered water tap beside your mixer. 3-way bundles, such as the Puretec Z1-T1, replace your mixer with one tap that delivers hot, cold and filtered water, keeping filtered and unfiltered water separate.

Which under sink water filter suits mains (town) water?
For mains water, a filter that reduces chlorine taste and odour and sediment is the usual starting point. What's the difference between the Puretec PureMix Z6 and Z7?
Both connect to the cold line of a standard mixer tap, so no extra tap is needed, and Puretec rates both at 9.5 litres per minute. The Z6 is a 0.1 micron (nominal) filter designed for low-sediment mains water, rated up to 60,000 litres. The Z7 is a 1 micron (nominal) filter designed for mains, rain, harsh and rural supplies, with anti-scaling protection and a rated capacity of 63,500 litres.
Do I need a separate tap for an under sink water filter?
Not always. Inline systems such as the Puretec PureMix Z6, Z7 and Oliveri Inline filter the cold water feeding your existing mixer tap. Kits such as the Puretec TW1, Z18 and X4 include a dedicated filtered water tap, which needs a tap hole in the sink or benchtop. 3-way mixers, like the Puretec Tripla range, deliver hot, cold and filtered water from a single tap.
Can an under sink water filter treat rainwater?
Yes, if it's designed for it. Puretec notes rainwater can pick up bacteria, sediment, tastes and odours from roofs, gutters and tanks. The Hybrid M1 connects to any mixer tap and uses Radfire UV technology to kill up to 99.9% of bacteria. The Z1-RW-K is a dual-stage rainwater kit with 0.1 micron Ultra Z filtration, and the PureMix Z7 is designed for mains, rain, harsh and rural supplies.
How often should I change an under sink filter cartridge?
It depends on the cartridge's rated capacity and how much water you use. For example, Puretec rates the PureMix Z6 cartridge at up to 60,000 litres and the Z2 cartridge at 38,000 litres. Some systems, such as the Puretec TS100, include an LED filter reminder. Follow the manufacturer's recommended interval, and replace sooner if flow drops or tastes and odours return.
Will an under sink water filter remove fluoride?
Most under sink filters aren't designed for fluoride, and some, such as the Puretec TW1 and X4, are listed as not removing fluoride or essential minerals.
