Whole House Water Filtration Systems

It filters water where it enters your home, so every tap, shower and appliance receives filtered water. Depending on the system, it reduces sediment, chlorine, taste and odour, and some models also reduce scale build-up or treat bacteria with UV. Puretec notes this helps protect hot water systems, washing machines, dishwashers and tapware from chlorine and sediment.

They do different jobs. An under sink filter treats drinking water at one tap, while a whole house system filters water for every tap, the shower and appliances. Many homes use both. Puretec suggests pairing a whole house system such as the FilterWall F5 with an under sink filter like the PureMix Z7 to further reduce exposure to chemicals such as PFAS in drinking water. Choose a system designed for tank water. Puretec's EM2 series is designed specifically for rainwater, with a washable first-stage sediment cartridge for dirt, rust and algae, and the EM2-75 can operate on gravity feed pressure. Where bacteria is a concern, a combined filtration and UV system such as the WU-UV150 or WU-UV250 is an option. For bore, river or dam water, Puretec recommends a water test before choosing a system.

Size it by flow rate. Puretec rates the FilterWall F3 and F4 at 30 litres per minute for small to medium homes, and the F5 and F6 at 55 litres per minute for homes with two or more bathrooms. The WH2 series comes in models from 30 to 60 litres per minute. If several showers and appliances often run at once, choose a higher flow rate and ask your plumber to confirm the connection size.

Puretec states carbon filtration is a commonly accepted way to reduce PFAS and that the FilterWall F5's 20-inch carbon filter aids in reducing exposure. Puretec is still in the early stages of third-party testing, so it recommends having your water independently tested. Replace the cartridges at the intervals the manufacturer recommends; how often depends on your water quality and usage. Puretec offers Premium Care Kits matched to specific systems, including the FilterWall F3 to F6, WH2-30, WH2-55 and EM2-60, so you get the right cartridges in one pack with no special tools required. UV systems also need periodic lamp replacement.
